Welcome to Artes Japonica
Japanese Antiques
As the name indicates — the art of Japan — we sell a number of antiques which reflect Japan's rich heritage of craftsmanship.
Though we essentially specialize in small chests and boxes, we also offer a small but selective array of what we call "samurai art", that is, antiques which include armour (occasionally armour parts), swords, and the occasional rare and unusual item (battle flags, war fans, jutte).
The boxes we sell include tobacco boxes, funadansu, or sea captains' chests, suzuribako, fudebako and chokinbako. These had a specific purpose and were amazingly designed, especially the funadansu.

Summer 2011
19th August, 2011
The summer months have been interesting with the emergence of items coming from the Tohoku districts with provate individuals selling their family treasures to pay for damages sustained during the March earthquake.
Despite the stock market ups and downs we have also taken note of the fact that our clients are asking for rarer and more unusual antiques, "things out of the ordinary" they ask us.
We look forward to the autumn season and the continued hunt for the "art of the samurai".
