Boxes
Shop's medicine and document box
Rare and unusual wooden box, used to used to belong to a medicine shop. Upper area may have been used to carry/store medicine and lower drawers for receipts, seals, writing brushes.
- Interesting features are twofold. First, that there is Japanese script on all four sides.
Much of it is difficult to read, as it is old script (we have asked some senior professors to have a look and tell us if they can decipher what is written) but what we have determined is that the writing on the back indicates a medicine shop's name.
The other unusual feature is the family crest above the drawers, thus indicating that this belonged to a noble family. Indeed, the construction shows good quality throughout and the wood used for the exterior is hinoki. The inner drawers are made of Japanese cypress.
There is a carrying cord which is fitted to two metal rings on either side of the box. All the hardware is present and in good overall condition despite its age (Meiji period). One of the finest boxes we've had the chance to offer for sale in a long time...
